AAKRITI NATURE CLUB

We all know that we are part of the environment we live in. And the solution to many environmental problems lie in our attitude towards environment. Be it awareness to keep our surroundings clean or the realization to conserve natural resources by re- using and recycling wherever possible, they all are attitudinal. But changing the attitudes of 100core plus people is not going to happen overnight.

The best way to attempt to bring about a change in the attitudes in the society is through young students. With the support of our management, faculty & students we would like to start and maintain a successful environmental club in our college. It suggests a myriad of activities that clubs can pursue and where to go for help. It encourages us to study the local environment and to contribute to solving environmental problems. In so doing, we will be playing an important role in environmental education for sustainable development (EESD).

In view of this, our college has made special efforts to start the Nature-club, namely AAKRITI.

Objectives

  • Enriching the importance of Trees in the society
  • Aware the importance of Reuse, Reduce, Recycle in the society
  • Enlighten and motivate the students & fellow people to understand their responsibilities and roles towards environment
  • Promoting our college and community towards the protection of nature
  • Enhancing the importance of medical gardens in the college, where it is possible

Initiatives done for the Environment and Sustainability:

➢ providing a safe and healthful workplace

  • Enhancing awareness among our employees, volunteers, and users – educating and motivating them to act in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • Restriction of vehicles inside the campus, usage of battery vehicles inside campus.
  • Arrangement of water pots at few places for birds and animals
  •  All the electronic devices are maintained regularly to avoid scathing.
  • Using Led Lights throughout the college to reduce the cost of electricity and overall energy use.
  • Solar energy Harnessing Device Solar power plant was also installed in the Campus for energy consumption.
  • The roads are beautified with trees on both sides. Each entrance of the college is monitored by Security persons; they help the smooth functioning of the pedestrian facility.
  • Plastic-free campus: The campus has been declared plastic-free. The use of plastic is strictly restricted on the Students are advised to bring their lunch in steel boxes, which reduces the accumulation of plastic carry bags on the campus.
  • Separate waste baskets are used for bio-degradable and non-biodegradable materials. Reusable cups and plates are promoted inside the campus

Waste Management in CMREC

Solid waste management

The solid waste is segregated by providing separate dustbins for bio-degradable and plastic waste. AAKRITI, Nature Club from CMREC takes an initiative to reduce the solid waste in the college premises as a part of which they came up with recycling process which a WOW (Wealth out of Waste) programme is taken up by ITC Ltd, to handle paper, metal, glass, and plastic. Metal waste from the workshop are stored and given to authorized scrap agents for further processing.

Liquid waste management

In our chemistry laboratory, organic solvents are collected in a special container – chemically compatible, securely fitted with a tight-fitting lid and labelled as hazardous waste and handover to authorized agents. Corrosive liquids are appropriately diluted to a pH between 5.5 and 10.5 and then, these can go down the drain.

E-waste management

Obsolete Computers, printers and other equipment from CMREC are donated to charitable organizations if they are in working condition. We have MoU with M&F Social Enterprise for establishing plant in our college for making use of e-waste to good products. The main aim is to collect E-Waste and segregate the useful circuits and components and make it into useful products. This will help by providing employment to village youth.

Events

Massive Bucket Immersion:

The main aim of this program is to protect our lakes and also bringing back our indigos practice and to stop the use of pastor-of-Paris (POP) idol worship. It also aims to start a new practice of celebrating the Ganesh festival and to make the immersion a green practice by immersing the clay Ganesh in our households itself.

Recycling:

Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. It is an alternative to “conventional” waste disposal that can save material and help lower greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling can prevent the waste of potentially useful materials and reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, thereby reducing: energy usage, air pollution, and water pollution. Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” waste hierarchy.

Eco Film Fest:

Enhancing the importance of environment and the methods that can be adopted to protect it in all the possible ways is explained in this ECO FILM FEST by the movies.

The above events are organized as a part of celebrations on the following days:

  • 29th April, 2017: Inaugural of the club
  • 5th June: Worlds Environment Day (ECO FILM FEST)
  • 29th-31st August, 2017: Massive Bucket Immersion
  • 28th -30th October, 2017: Environmental leader ship training (Camp)
  • 21th November, 2017: Recycling
  • 14th-16th December, 2017: workshop on Environment & Sustainable Technology (WEST)
  • Recycling process till date
  • Every year “Worlds environment day “ was celebrated  on June 5

Planting more trees for greening the campus : Due to constant efforts of NSS, Nature Club and Environmental Club, extensive tree planting drive is initiated in the campus. Hence a thick green canopy is extensively present in the campus. For improving the aesthetic value, a lawn with topiaries is maintained in front of the Chamber of Principal. The insitu conserved biodiversity area is having rich plantation and allowed to grow without pruning. Overall the canopy of the campus serves as a mechanism for supply of ample amount of oxygen and utilization of carbon dioxide by carbon fixation
