Establishment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Academic Year: 2021–2022

  1. Background and Purpose

CMR Engineering College, in alignment with global sustainability initiatives and national priorities in higher education, resolved to establish and implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework within the institution during the Academic Year 2021–22. The initiative aims to integrate sustainability into academics, research, campus operations, and community outreach.

On this date, the institution formally constituted the SDG Committee and adopted an SDG Policy relevant to an engineering college.

  1. Selected Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Considering the nature of technical education, institutional capacity, and societal relevance, the following five SDGs were identified for focused implementation:

  1. SDG 4 – Quality Education
    Promote inclusive, equitable, and quality education with emphasis on skill development, innovation, and lifelong learning.
  2. SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
    Encourage energy efficiency, renewable energy awareness, and sustainable energy practices on campus.
  3. SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
    Foster innovation, research, startups, and collaboration with industry for sustainable development.
  4. SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
    Promote sustainable campus practices, smart infrastructure, and community engagement.
  5. SDG 13 – Climate Action
    Create awareness and initiate actions related to climate change mitigation, environmental protection, and sustainability.

4.1 Policy Statement

CMR Engineering College is committed to contributing to sustainable development by embedding the Sustainable Development Goals into its academic programs, research activities, institutional governance, campus operations, and community outreach.

4.2 Policy Objectives

  • To integrate SDGs into curriculum delivery, projects, and research activities.
  • To promote awareness of sustainability among students, faculty, and staff.
  • To encourage innovation and interdisciplinary research addressing societal challenges.
  • To adopt environmentally responsible and energy-efficient campus practices.
  • To engage with local communities through outreach and extension activities aligned with SDGs.

4.3 Implementation Strategy

  • Incorporation of SDG concepts in courses, seminars, workshops, and student projects.
  • Promotion of renewable energy usage and energy conservation measures on campus.
  • Support for research, innovation, and incubation related to sustainable technologies.
  • Organization of awareness programs, campaigns, and community development initiatives.
  • Periodic review and reporting of SDG-related activities.
